A 4.8 magnitude aftershock hit Haiti on January 21, a week after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake devastated the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince.
Casualty figures and the loss of property from this aftershock have not yet been reported.
However, according to the Haitian Finance Minister Ronald Baudin, supermarkets in the capital have reopened.
Banks in the country’s provinces are expected to open their doors again on January 22 and those in the capital are scheduled to reopen on January 23, said the Finance Minister.
In the meantime, part of the seaport in Port-au-Prince , which was heavily ravaged by the earthquake, had reopened to receive shipments of aid.
On January 21, the World Bank announced that it will waive payments on Haiti’s 38 million USD debt for the next five years.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has also proposed an interest-free 100 million USD loan for Haiti until late 2011.
The Brazilian government has decided to spend additional 208 million USD on Haiti to help it re-establish security and rebuild the country.
