HCM City encourages children to wear helmet

A fun event to promote helmet wearing among Vietnamese children took place at Phan Van Tri primary school in District 1, Ho Chi Minh City on April 24.

During the day, joyful games and 500 gifts of helmets made the road-safety learning of local pupils an enjoyable experience.

Swedish Ambassador to Vietnam Camilla Mellander said Vietnamese parents and Government need to pay more attention to their younger generation’s safety on the road. She hoped the event will encourage more citizens, particularly youth, to wear helmet.

According to Tran Viet Hung from the municipal Steering C ommittee for Traffic Safety, Ho Chi Minh City leads the nation in terms of the helmet wearing rate and has implemented a range of practical programmes to promote the safety precaution.

The Sweden Embassy in Vietnam and the Asian Injury Prevention Foundation (AIP) organised the event.

An AIP 2014 research showed that only some 38 percent of children wore helmets in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh and Da Nang.-VNA
