Professional and amateur artists from 27 clubs from the southern region will participate in the HCM City Tai Tu Music Festival 2011 that opens this weekend in the Van Thanh Tourist Park.

On an outdoor stage over two days, the artists will perform 141 items as songs and instrumental music pieces before an expected audience of about 1,000 people.

One of the region's prestigious tai tu troupes, the talented Bac Lieu ensemble is an audience favourite.

Bac Lieu artists, with their strong voices and performance skills, are expected to impress the fans with popular songs like Da Co Hoai Lang, composed in 1919 by Cao Van Lau, a native of the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta province.

The song tells of the love, anguish and pride of a young woman watching her husband go to fight for the country.

The festival will also include lectures on music by music researchers like Tran Van Khe, Vinh Bao, Ngo Hong Khanh, Huynh Khai and Nguyen My Liem.

Tai tu music is considered the prototype for vong co (tunes of nostalgia) and cai luong (reformed opera) of south Vietnam. It is a part of the region's traditional music that began a hundred years ago.

The music is associated with farmers who sing these songs in the fields or while relaxing at the end of a hard day.

It is always performed at traditional festivals, weddings and death anniversaries in the provinces of Ca Mau and Bac Lieu.

In HCM City, the Workers Cultural House holds a tai tu festival called Huong Sac Nam Bo (The Colours and Flavours of the South) every year to encourage music researchers, young talents, veteran artists and fans to expand the art further.

"We hope that the festival will give people, particularly youngsters, the opportunity to understand and preserve the region's traditional music," said music researcher Mai My Duyen, a member of the festival's organising board.

She said that the National Cultural Heritage Department in co-operation with Vietnam Music Institute are working to complete documents to gain recognition for the art from by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage.

The festival opens on tomorrow morning, at the Van Thanh Tourist Park, 48/10 Dien Bien Phu Street, Binh Thanh District. Entrance is free./.
