Hung My promotes rattan, bamboo products

Rattan and bamboo products have exhibited potential for development over recent years, and Hung My commune in Chiem Hoa district in the northern mountainous province of Tuyen Quang has established a rattan and bamboo cooperative group to help create jobs.

Taking advantage of natural materials found locally, such as rattan, bamboo, and others, workers at Hung My’s rattan and bamboo cooperative group create unique products such as conical hats, fans, and bags. Materials pass through several steps before use, such as boiling and drying, so bear natural colors.

Previously, the cooperative team’s products were mainly baskets, but after many attended technical training courses production has increased and more difficult and sophisticated decorative items are being made, such as trays, vases, and hats, to increase the incomes of cooperative members.

Hung My is a poor commune, with more than 25 households making rattan and bamboo products. Each family can earn some 215 USD a month from the trade. Hung My’s rattan and bamboo products are known for their sophisticated weaving techniques.

Chiem Hoa district has a great deal of potential to develop products associated with the characteristics of each commune. Local governments and authorized agencies have encouraged and created the conditions necessary for cooperatives to develop, through building brand names, conducting product promotions, and seeking stable market output./.
