Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has ordered greater attention to the operation and regulation of the water levels at hydropower reservoirs in northern localities to ensure safety of the dyke systems and minimise damage due to floods in downstream areas.
Since the end of June, the water levels in hydropower reservoirs have been rising and technical problems of a number of thermopower turbines solved, ensuring a basically sufficient power supply in the north, said Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Do Thang Hai.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT), the Vietnam Electricity (EVN), and experts shared the view that power supply will be basically guaranteed this year, but the challenge is that demand is forecast to surge amid the post-pandemic economic recovery.
Vietnam could face an electricity shortage of 6.6 billion kWh in 2021 and 11.8 billion kWh in 2022. The shortage could increase to 15 billion kWh in 2023, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT).
The Power Generation Corporation 1 (GENCO 1) under the State-owned Vietnam Electricity produced over 26.65 billion kWh over the last 10 months, representing 77.5 percent of this year’s target and a year-on-year rise of 12.3 percent.
