The International Labour Organisation (ILO) is hosting a high-level meeting in Bali , Indonesia on November 7-8 to address challenges that may be encountered by ASEAN employers in preparation for the ASEAN integration in 2015.

Leaders, scholars and businesses from all 10 ASEAN member countries, ASEAN Deputy Secretary General Alicia Dela Rosa Bala, as well as representatives of employers’ organisation attended the event, which also focuses on measures that can be applied by employers to adapt with new regional labour market conditions and realities.

According to Yoshiteru Uramoto, ILO Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, once established, the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) is expected to bring a more relaxed flow of goods and services, and increase intra-regional labour migration.

However, several issues have been considered as potential barriers in maximizing the benefits of integration. These include imbalances in labour demand and supply, and the need to improve labour market governance and institutions.

ILO will intensify its efforts to assist constituents by providing data, analysis, and advice to maximise the opportunities presented by the AEC, he added.

The discussions will cover emerging issues and trends in the ASEAN labour markets, changes in employment relationships, regional labour migration issues.

Labour market reforms and measures to build an effective relationship between all stakeholders will also be included in the agenda.

The outcomes of the meeting will be a foundation for the building labour-related policies of ASEAN and its member states.-VNA
