New Delhi (VNA) - Armies of India and Thailand on August 6 began a two week-long military exercise with a focus on enhancing anti-terror cooperation between the two sides.

The Press Trust of India (PTI) quoted a senior Indian Army official as saying that the focus of the exercise 'Maitree' is to increase interoperability and enhance coordination in dealing with the challenge of terrorism.

"The exercise will hone the tactical and technical skills in joint counter insurgency and counter terrorist operations in rural and urban scenario under UN mandate," he said.

Both sides will jointly train, plan and execute a series of well- developed tactical drills that may be encountered in an urban warfare scenario," he added.

India and Thailand have been hit by a number of deadly terrorist attacks. In last April, Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwan admitted that the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) is likely planning a base in his country.-VNA
