Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesia's central bank (BI) has announced a plan to use digital rupiah amid boom in digital transactions in the country.
Speaking at a recent press conference, BI Governor Perry Warjiyo said BI will be the only State agency authorized to issue digital rupiah, following many central banks around the world that are developing so-called central bank digital currencies (CBDCs).
The currency will use a technology platform that is compatible with other central banks' digital currencies.
Indonesia currently bans the use of cryptocurrencies as a means of payment, but allows transactions of the digital assets in the commodity futures market for investment purposes./.
