Indonesia on February 13 received a batch of attack fighter jets from the Republic of Korea (RoK), as part of its programme to reinforce its air-force capacity.
Present at the handover ceremony were Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro and army, naval and air-force commanders.
The batch included 16 T-50 Golden Eagle fighter jets worth 400 million USD. They will be deployed at the Iswahyudi airbase in Madiun, East Java to replace the current fleet of Hawk Mk 53 trainer planes.
Under the jet purchase contract signed between the Indonesian Air Force and the Korea Aerospace Industries in May 2011, both sides will also manufacture this kind of jet together.
In the foreseeable future, these fourth-generation fighter jets will be tailored for training, then equipped with radars and advanced weapons to perform all required tasks, towards realising Indonesia’s strategy ensuring its national defence power until 2025.-VND
