Hanoi (VNA) –Indonesia is drafting a regulation enabling media outlets to receive paymentsfrom digital platforms or aggregators that carry their content, the country’sPress Council has said.

The new law is expected to beissued as a presidential regulation within a month.

According to Arif Zulkifli, a member of the council, these platforms benefitfrom carrying content generated by media companies while most media firms receivesmall profits. This is unfair, he said, addingthat the new law is expected to level the playing field between media and techfirms in terms of providing content and generating profit.

Addressing a communications-related event held on February 9, President JokoWidodo said that the enactment of a new law is essential since foreign digitalplatforms make up 60% of the advertisement market in the Southeast Asiancountry.

The law, proposed two yearsago, is inspired by similar laws in Germany and Australia.

In March 2021, Australiaenacted a law that requires technology companies to pay local publishers to usetheir content. Since then, more than 30 agreements have been signed between technologycompanies and media outlets, paying for content that generated clicks andadvertising dollars, according to a report by the country's Treasury./.
