The Indonesia National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) announced an end to the search for the bodies of the 56 people still missing from the crash of an AirAsia flight last December on March 17.
Flight QZ 8501 crashed into the Java Sea on its way from Indonesia’s Surabaya to Singapore on December 28, 2014 during bad weather. All 162 people on board were killed.
A multi-national rescue effort led by the Indonesian military has recovered 106 bodies so far with the latest bodies found on March 14. The campaign has reduced in size over the past few weeks.
S.B. Supriyadi, the Basarnas official coordinating the search effort, said all four ships dedicated to the search mission are to be called off on March 18.
The black boxes with recorded flight data and cockpit voices were found two weeks after the crash. However, few details of the analysis of the recorders have been made public.
Indonesian Minister of Transport Ignasius Jonan said the final result of the investigation will be revealed by August.-VNA
