Hanoi (VNA) - An Indonesian court on April 24 handed down a 15-year-jail sentence to former Speaker of Parliament Setya Novanto over corruption charges.
Novanto played a key role in the embezzlement case related to the electronic identity card (e-ID) project worth 5.9 trillion rupiah (some 424 million USD), presiding judge Yanto said.
The graft case caused 2.3 trillion rupiah (172.8 million USD) in financial losses to the state budget, according to the court.
The court has imposed 15 years jail term, adding that Novanto is obligated to pay a fine of 500 million rupiah (about 36,000 USD). He is also banned to hold public office for five years after serving his sentence.
Novanto said that he would consider whether to file an appeal.
Some other politicians, government officials and businessmen also face allegations relating to the corruption case.-VNA
