Indonesia: Fresh quake hits Lombok island

Hanoi (VNA) – Another strong earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale shook the tourist island of Lombok, Indonesia’s West Nusa Tenggara province, on August 9.

According to Indonesia’s meteorology and geophysics agency, many buildings on the island collapsed due to the quake. There has been no information on the number of casualties, and no warning of tsunami.

Earlier on August 5, the island was jolted by a 6.9-magnitude quake. The death toll from the disaster has climbed to 347 while nearly 1,500 people were injured as of August 8 night. 

The data was reported at a meeting of sub-district heads and the regent on August 8, said spokesman of the National Agency for Disaster Management of Indonesia Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

He said over 165,000 out of some 200,000 living in the north of Lombok island have lost their houses and been forced to evacuate.

According to the agency, there were up to 332 aftershocks following the earthquake.-VNA
