Jakarta (VNA) – Separatist gunmen shot an aircraft carrying soldiers and local officials in Indonesia’s easternmost province of Papua on January 28, killing one soldier and injuring another.
Spokesman of Cendrawasih military command Col. Muhammad Aidi said that the shooting occurred when the plane was about to land at an airport in Nduga district.
The rebels fled into the jungle after soldiers on the ground opened fire.
Two soldiers on the plane were injured and one later died in hospital, Muhammad Aidi stated.
Insurgency has simmered in the Papua region since it was annexed by Indonesia in 1963. Last December, an attack also happened in Nduga district, leaving 19 dead.-VNA
