As the world’s largest aquaculture grower – it produced 14.52 million tonnes of fisheries produce in 2014 - Indonesia is determined to boost this sector even further in the future.
The country aims to leverage its waters, including fresh water, brackish water and sea water, to the fullest extent to enlarge the production of aquaculture, said Slamet Soebjakto, Director General of Aquaculture Farming at Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries.
Aquaculture is deemed as a key industry in Indonesia, he highlighted, adding that the country is striving to achieve an 18 million tonne seafood yield.
As a member of the Network of Aquaculture Centres in the Asia-Pacific (NACA) since 2005, the Indonesian government can expand cooperation with other countries in the region. It can also receive updated information about fish and shrimp diseases, helping it to take preventive measures in a prompt and effective manner.-VNA
