Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesia announced on September 26 that it is installing nearly 400 seismic sensors, which are able to give warnings 15-30 seconds before earthquakes strike, in Jakarta, Sunda Strait, and West Sumatra.
Director of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati said the number of sensors will rise to more than 560 by the end of this year.
He said that the modern earthquake sensors can receive and send earthquake signals more accurately, helping save lives.
Indonesia, one of the most disaster-prone nations on earth, straddles the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where tectonic plates collide and large portion of the world’s volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur.
Last year, the country suffered from 11,600 earthquakes. A 7.5-magnitude quake and a subsequent tsunami in Palu on Sulawesi island on September 28, 2018 killed more than 4,300 people, and forced about 170,000 residents to evacuate. The disaster turned the ground into liquid mud and destroyed many areas in Central Sulawesi province./.
