Indonesia led shrimp exports to the US in January, claiming 22.7 percent of the total market share, worth a total value of 93.5 million USD, according to data released by the official US trade department.
India followed in the second position with 91.4 million USD, or 22.19 percent of the market share; Ecuador came third with 51.1 million USD, or 12.41 percent of the market share.
In the ASEAN region, Vietnam and Thailand gained 44.3 million USD and 34.2 million USD with a market share of 10.7 and 8.3 percent respectively.
According to Commercial Attache of the Indonesian Embassy in the US, Ni Made Ayu Marhini, the increasing shrimp export to the US is good news in the midst of government efforts to boost exports by up to 300 percent by 2019.
Made noted that shrimp is the top seafood product of the US market and other fishery products such as tuna, crab, and processed products are also popular.
In 2014, the total export of fish and seafood products from Indonesia to the US reached 1.3 billion USD, of which 1.1 billion USD was estimated by shrimps.-VNA
