Indonesia, New Zealand strengthen agriculture cooperation Hanoi, March 4 (VNA) – Opportunities remain to widen cooperation between Indonesia and New Zealand in agriculture and cattle breeding in particular.
Indonesia hopes to learn from New Zealand’s experience in the sector to improve the sustainability of its beef production and food security, Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi told her New Zealand counterpart Murray McCully at a meeting on March 3 during her visit to New Zealand .
New Zealand is one of the biggest producers of dairy and beef globally, with about 6.7 million milk cows and 3.7 million beef cattle in 2014.
The strengthening of cooperation in agriculture with New Zealand will enable the Southeast Asian country to diversify its beef and meat cattle supply, Retno said.
Indonesia supplies nearly 50 percent of New Zealand’s palm kernel expeller needs, an important source of supplementary stockfeed used mainly in the dairy industry, and 43 percent of New Zealand exports to Indonesia are dairy products.
Their bilateral trade reached approximately 1.3 billion USD last year.
Indonesia is also seeking access to the New Zealand market for its tropical mangosteen and mango fruits.-VNA
