Jakarta (VNA) - The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) has nominated Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo as the party's candidate for the 2024 presidential election.
PDI-P chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri announced the nomination during the party's internal consolidation and Eid al-Fitr gathering at Batu Tulis, Bogor City, West Java.
To nominate a presidential candidate, a party must obtain at least 20% of the total seats in parliament or 25% of votes in the previous legislative election.
PDI-P is the only party that meets this criterion as it has 22.26% of the seats in parliament. Other parties must form a coalition if they want to nominate a presidential candidate.
Observers acknowledged that the nomination of Ganjar Pranowo as the PDI-P candidate will affect Indonesian politics in the coming time. The Governor of Central Java has also received positive public assessments through recent surveys.
The Election Commission of Indonesia (KPU) and the Ministry of Interior have set February 14, 2024 as the date to hold the next general election to elect the President, Vice President, members of the Senate and House of Representatives.
The nomination period for presidential and vice-presidential candidates will run from October 19 to November 25, 2023./.
