Indonesia plans to build 62 new airports in the next five years, with the aim of upgrading the domestic transport system and intensifying connectivity with other countries.

According to the country’s Deputy Minister of Transportation Bambang Susantono, Indonesia now has 237 airports, of which 26 big ones are managed by two State-owned companies PT Angkasa Pura I and PT Angkasa Pura II. The remaining are operated by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation.

The expansion is essential to improve accessibility to the regions of Indonesia, which is comprised of more than 17,000 islands, Susantono said.

He added that most of the new airports will be built in the country’s eastern regions.-VNA
