Indonesia is ramping up its domestic defence industry to shed reliance on imported weapons, as part of a scheme to modernise the army and ensure its national defence capability by 2025.
Chief of the Army Staff Gen. Budiman said the army and top universities have worked together to produce 15 different weapons for six months, including nano-satellites, drones and an automatic position reporting system, among others.
By developing weaponry at home, state funds can be saved and other relevant industries become stronger, he said.
Budiman added that only 13 Indonesian weapon technologies obtained international patents in 2010. The number was a far cry from the Republic of Korea with 10,466, China’s 16,403 and the US’s 48,896.-VNA
