Police in the North Sumatra province of Indonesia sank a Malaysian fishing ship for illegally fishing off its shores on January 8.

Local Police Chief General Eko Hadi said his agency’s forces used dynamite to blow up the PKFA 7738-coded vessel in Belawan waters. The action has been deemed legal recourse by the court, and is the first time North Sumatran provincial police have forcibly sunk a foreign boat fishing illegally in their waters, he noted.

Previously, authorities in Riau Island province burned several foreign ships in response to unlawful fishing in Indonesian waters. Action was taken as a part of the country’s efforts to end rampant fish theft from national waters and boost maritime sector development.-VNA
