The Boroduhur Temple in Megalang district, Central Java, Indonesia - the world’s largest Buddhist temple – is targeting over 3.5 million tourist arrivals in 2014, a year-on-year increase of 18 percent.

Deputy head of operations at Boroduhur Temple Tourism Park, Aryanto Hendro, said the site welcomed over 3.2 million tourist arrivals, including 268,400 foreigners, in 2013.

Tourist visits tend to rise during religious holidays, and despite being a Buddhist place of worship, many visitors take advantage of time off work to travel to Boroduhur during Christmas and the Islamic Eid al-Fitr holiday.

Tourists from the Netherlands, Japan and Malaysia are the most common international visitors.

The temple was built around 750 AD during the country’s Syailendra Dynasty. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1991.-VNA
