Jakarta governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama announced on January 7 his approval of the construction of an 11 hectare athletic village in the Kemayoran sub district of Jakarta, as part of the preparation for the 2018 Asian Games.

The village, with a 1.2 billion rupiah price tag (over 10 million USD), is scheduled to be completed in 2017. It will connect with the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, the center of Jakarta, Old Town, Ancol beach, and other outlying cities including Bogor and Bekasi.

Earlier, Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, president of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), came to Indonesia to inspect the ongoing preparations for the 2018 Asian Games.

On this occasion, he expressed his intention to provide more infrastructure support for the city in developing infrastructure such as roads and public transportation, in order to ensure local readiness for the event.

Indonesia was poised to host the 2018 Asian Games after Vietnam’s withdrawal in April 2014. The OCA chose the capital of Jakarta, as well as two supplementary cities of Palembang and Bandung, to host the event.-VNA
