Jakarta (VNA) - Indonesia’s new capital city will be modelled on Silicon Valley, a base for tech and creative companies, besides hosting the government apparatus, according to Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

The Jakarta Post quoted Joko’s speech at a meeting with journalists on September 3, saying the yet-to-be named city in East Kalimantan will foster development of technology startups and digitised manufacturing sector.

It will boast an efficient, technology-driven urban system for providing public services, Joko said, adding that the capital will also be dotted with world-class educational institutions, modern hospitals, parks and a green transportation system with only electric vehicles.

Previously, in August 26, President Joko announced that Indonesia's new capital would be moved from Jakarta, which is threatened by land subsidence and severe traffic congestion, to East Kalimantan province.

The plan is forecast to cost 466 trillion rupiah (32.79 billion USD), of which the government will provide 19 percent of the funding, the rest will be invested by public and private partners.-VNA
