– Indonesia will actively campaign for membership at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) during its 40th session, scheduled to take place in Geneva, Switzerland, from February 25-28.

Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi will attend the session and use this as a platform to campaign for Indonesia’s bid to become a member of the council for the 2020-2022 term.

She will be involved in around 15 bilateral meetings with a range of countries to seek their support.

Indonesia will compete with China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Iran, and the Republic of Marshall Islands in the Asia-Pacific region.

Achsanul Habib, Director of Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs at Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said Retno Marsudi will present Indonesia’s ideas, stances, and achievements thus far in promoting human rights.

Indonesia is also interested in a wide range of issues being discussed at the session, such as civil rights, economic rights, female empowerment, child rights, and the rights of people with disabilities.–VNA
