Jakarta (VNA) - Indonesian President Joko Widodo on January 11 announced that COVID-19 booster shots would be administered at no cost to all citizens.

In a statement, Widodo said the programme, which officially begins on January 12, will prioritize the elderly and vulnerable groups.

The booster shot against COVID-19 is very important to strengthen immunity when the SARS-CoV-2 virus continuously mutates, he said.

According to Indonesian Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin, the programme targets some 21 million people in 244 cities and regencies which have fully vaccinated at least 60 percent of their population.

Previously, Indonesia’s National Agency of Food and Drug Control (BPOM) issued an emergency use authorization (EUA) for vaccines from Sinovac, Pfizer/BioNTech, AstraZeneca, Moderna and Zifivax for booster injections./.
