The Indonesian and US air forces are undertaking a joint tactical airlift exercise, codenamed “Cope West 10” at Halim Perdanakusuma air base to the north of Jakarta.
The five-day exercise, which began on April 19, will include three C-130 Hercules cargo planes and 77 airmen and officers from the 374 th Airlift Wing, from the US air base in Yokota, Japan and one C-130 Hercules from the Indonesian Air Force.
The Halim Perdanakusumah air base commander, Colonel Djoko Senoputro said that the “Cope West 10” will enable them both to share techniques related to handling, lifting and dropping cargo in military operations as well as give them experience of conducting joint operations together.
New techniques demonstrated in this exercise will be very useful for relief activities when disasters occur, particularly when cargo planes cannot land in disaster-affected areas, according to the Indonesian commander.
This is the second joint airlift exercise deployed by the US and Indonesia since 1997./.
