Jakarta (VNA) – Indonesian Energy and Mineral Resource Ministry spokesperson Sujatmiko on June 6 said the country has sent a letter to the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) requesting to reactivate its membership in the group.
According to Energy and Mineral Resource Deputy Minister Arcandra Tahar, the letter was sent after Indonesia was invited to rejoin OPEC and it could avoid production cuts.
The Southeast Asian country was considering the invitation letter as long as their output will not get cut, he added.
Haid Mustofa Djiuraid, a special staff of the ministry, said Indonesia’s proposal had been agreed in principle by other OPEC members, but it is waiting for a formal response from OPEC on the matter.
The OPEC membership of Indonesia has been suspended in November 2016, less than a year after the country rejoined the organisation due to its disagreement on the group’s proposed production cuts.
Previously, in May 2016, OPEC members agreed to cut the oil output to 1.2 million barrels per day to tighten global supply and support prices. They were joined by some other major oil producers, including Russia, which cut 600,000 barrels per day.-VNA
