Hanoi (VNA) – Indonesia saw strong increases year-on-year in goods shipments overseas in May as some global commodities prices rose.

The Statistics Indonesia announced that the country’s export value reached 16.12 billion USD in May, up 12.47 percent, compared with 14.47 billion USD in April and a 9.01 percent growth.

Some commodities saw hikes in prices and demand, including coal, nickel, aluminum and copper, head of the statistic agency Kecuk Suhariyanto said.

The country saw a 28.12 percent growth in import value in May, to 17.64 billion USD, compared with a 34.68 percent growth to 16.09 billion USD in the preivous month.

The huge differential of export and import led to a trade deficit of 1.52 billion USD in May.

Indonesia is the world's largest exporter and producer of palm oil and coal, and the world’s biggest exporter of rubber and cocoa. It is also home to the second largest copper mine worldwide.

Export along with consumption and investment contributed the most to the country’s gross domestic product growth.-VNA
