The Philippines’ volcano Mayon in the eastern province of Albay recorded intense activity, forcing authorities to evacuate thousands of residents in fear of an eruption on September 17.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the volcano caused 38 earthquakes and 277 rock avalanches during a 24-hour period.
PHIVOLCS experts attributed this to the rising of eruptible magma.
Since September 12, Mayon has continued to emit an average of 457tonnes of sulfur dioxide per day, peaking at 2,360 tonnes on September 6.
On September 15, Philippine authorities declared level 3 alert on the country’s five-level warning scale, which means the volcano may erupt in the next few weeks.
Leaders of the local security force said evacuations would take three days, with approximately 8,000 out of 50,000 local residents having to leave their homes.
