Japan will provide 10.5 billion JPY (102.9 million USD) in low-interest loans for Myanmar to help the Southeast Asian country upgrade its communications network linking major cities amid increasing demand for mobile phones and the Internet.
Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida announced the decision during talks with his Myanmar counterpart Wunna Maung Lwin on August 9 on the sidelines of ASEAN meetings in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar.
The loans are expected to help improve communications network involving Yangon, Mandalay and Nay Pyi Taw, as well as to enhance access to the Internet in Yangon, the country’s largest city.
For his part, Wunna Maung Lwin said that Myanmar has decided to loosen its entry regulations by providing one-year, multiple-entry visas for Japanese businessmen.
Myanmar will do its utmost to boost regional security during its tenure as chair of ASEAN in 2014 through such measures as consolidating the legal system and strengthening the role of the East Asia Summit, he added.-VNA
