Ho Chi Minh City will have a chance to develop its semi-conductor industry as its High-tech park and a Japanese partner will jointly study and improve Minimal Fab technology, a new semi-conductor production system, as stipulated in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on September 15.

Accordingly, the Japanese Minimal Fab Development Association will provide a training course over one to two years for two researchers from the Saigon Hi-tech Park (SHTP)’s Research and Development Centre while transferring Minimal Fab technology to the SHTP after the course’s completion.

Minimal Fab uses a 0.5-inch (12.5 mm) production unit to deal with the production needs of variable kinds in different quantities. A localised cleaning technology with a sealed conveyance container called Minimal Shuttle can help eliminate the need for a clean room. Thus, the amount of capital invested in production equipment can be reduced by 1/1,000.

Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee Tat Thanh Cang underlined that the semi-conductor industry is among the four key sectors of the city to develop municipal industry, adding that the Minimal Fab model is relevant to Vietnamese small- and medium-sized enterprises.

He said that the cooperation will push the national semi-conductor industry’s development, making the country a leading nation to apply this technology.

State-of-the-art technology is the highlight of Minimal Fab, Chairman of the Minimal Fab Development Association Yasuyuki Harada said, underscoring that human resources training is prioritised in applying this technology.

The Japanese partner has completed about 100 Minimal Fab units and successfully manufactured semi-conductor products from the equipment. The Minimal Fab technology is expected to be transferred to Vietnam in the next three years.-VNA
