Japan , the US and other donors have agreed with five Southeast Asian countries along the Mekong River to support sustainable development in the region.
The agreement was reached at a meeting of the Friends of the Lower Mekong (FLM) held in Laos on February 1-2.
The agreement covers the areas of smart agriculture, water management, energy efficiency and environmental standards, according to a summary released by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The donors also include Australia, the European Union (EU), the Republic of Korea, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), and the World Bank (WB). The five Mekong River countries are Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.
At the FLM meeting, Japan affirmed to increase tie-ups between the Japan-Mekong cooperative framework and the FLM initiative for the development of the Mekong region.
Meanwhile, the US pledged to promote the use of alternative energy and low-emission technologies in the region.
During a visit to Japan by US President Barack Obama in April last year, the Japanese and US governments agreed to help strengthen ASEAN connectivity, including in the Mekong region through closer collaboration between Japan-Mekong summit meetings and the US’ Lower Mekong Initiative.-VNA
