Japanese investment in Cambodia drops despite trade spike

Japanese investment in Cambodia reduced to 47.9 million USD in 2014 from 48.9 million USD in the previous year, due to the hike of the minimum wage in Cambodia and rising electricity prices across Southeast Asia .

Cambodia ’s exports to Japan grew 33 percent year-on-year to 771 million USD, while Cambodia imported 254 million USD worth of goods from the market last year.

Textiles and garments are expected to dominate the exports in the next two years.

Cambodian economist Srey Chanthy was optimistic about the future of Japanese investment in the country, which he said will continue to rise in tandem with the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), of which Cambodia is to be a member./.
