A visitor learn about Japanese pottery products at the exhibition. (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – A Japanese pottery exhibition themed“Yakishime - Earth Metamorphosis” opened at the Vietnam NationalFine Arts Museum in Hanoi on April 4.
The exhibition jointly organised by the Japan Foundation Center forCultural Exchange in Vietnam and the museum is amongthe activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of theVietnam-Japan diplomatic relationship.
The exhibition, which runs until April 20, introduces the ceramics technique yakishime whichfires unglazed wares at high temperatures. One of the most basic means ofproducing ceramics, Yakishime has been developed in numerous distinctivedirections in Japan.
The display aims to introduce local people to Japanese cultureby examining Yakishime from the earliest examples to contemporary works.
Yakishime dates back to the fourth or fifth century. However, itwas not until the 12th century through to the 17th century that the techniquebecame firmly established and was used in a significant portion of theproduction of major ceramic centres in Japan, including Bizen, Shigaraki, andTokoname.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Nguyen Anh Minh, Director ofthe Vietnam Fine Arts Museum emphasised that Japanese culture in general andJapanese ceramic culture in particular have always been a topic of interest andattraction to the public in Vietnam.
Doi Katsuma, Director of the Japan Cultural Exchange Centre inVietnam, said that it is hoped that through experiencing Yakishime ceramicproducts, the Vietnamese public will know more about the diversity andcreativity of Japanese culture./.
