Laos, Myanmar agree to boost bilateral ties

Laos and Myanmar have agreed to further promote their long-standing relationship and cooperative ties by effectively carrying out signed agreements and exchange visits at all levels.

The agreement was reached on the occasion of the Laos visit of Senior General Than Shwe, chairman of the State Peace and Development Council of Myanmar, at the invitation of the State President of Lao People’s Democratic Republic Choummaly Sayasone, from October 1-3.

The two sides agreed to promote cooperation in many fields, especially ensuring security along shared border areas, creating favourable conditions for border localities to deal with drug trafficking and illegal immigration.

President Choummaly Sayasone and Senior General Than Shwe also encouraged exchange activities, the construction of Laos-Myanmar Friendship Bridge and pledged to strengthen mutual support at regional and international forums.

During Senior General Than Shew’s visit, the two sides signed an agreement to establish a provincial-level Border Committee./.
