Laos to expand Wattay international airport

The Department of Civil Aviation of Laos and Japan’s Nippon Koei Co. Ltd on July 16 signed a consultancy contract on the expansion of the Wattay International Airport in Vientiane.

Under the contract, Nippon Koei will provide consultancy services forcontractors of the airport expansion project, which aims to enable theairport to accommodate increasing airplanes, passengers and cargo.

The project has a total investment of 97 million USD sourced from theJapanese Government’s official development assistance (ODA), of which8.5 million USD will be used for consultancy services.

Facilities to be expanded include an international passenger terminaland parking areas while a domestic terminal, an aircraft maintenanceworkshop and runways will be built.

According toofficial data, the Wattay International Airport served around 520,000passengers in 2011 and the number climbed to 800,000 two years later. Itis expected that by 2025, the number of passengers via the airport willhit 2 million per year.-VNA
