A three-year-old boy from Cambodia’s Prey Veng province has tested positive for avian influenza H5N1, bringing the number of the cases in the country so far this year to 14.
The result was announced by the Cambodian Health Ministry and the World Health Organisation (WHO) on July 12.
The boy was admitted to a hospital in Phnom Penh with fever, breathing difficulties and a cough on July 10. He has been treated with Tamiflu and is now in a stable condition.
Of the 14 recorded cases in Cambodia this year, only five patients have survived. The latest death was recorded on July 2.
Most of H5N1-infected cases have occurred in localities neighbouring Vietnam , such as Takeo, Prey Veng and Kampot.
H5N1 influenza is a flu that normally spreads between sick poultry, but it can sometimes spread from poultry to humans through direct contact.
This year, Cambodia has seen its worst outbreak of the virus since it was first identified in 2004.
To date, the country has recorded 35 human cases of the virus, with 28 fatalities.
Since 2003, the A/H5N1 virus has taken the lives of 376 people according to WHO statistics.-VNA
