Vietnam’s No.1 chess player Le Quang Liem on August 20 recorded one of the biggest victories of his career to pull off a shock win over the world No.4 to advance to the fourth round of the Chess World Cup in Tromso, Norway.
Liem defeated Russia’s No.1 Alexander Grischuk, who has an Elo of 2785, 2.5-1.5 after two tiebreak games, caused by a 1-1 draw after the first two legs of the third round.
The victory is a landmark for Vietnamese chess as this is the first time a Vietnamese player has ever made if through to the fourth round of the world’s biggest chess event.-VNA
