Vu Ba Dong will replace China ’s Chen Yun Fat as coach of the national women’s football team, Nguyen Trong Hy, chairman of the Vietnam Football Federation, confirmed on March 31.
Chen, who led the Vietnamese women’s national football team to victory in the Southeast Asian Games in 2009, resigned suddenly without explanation.
Among leading candidates for the post, Chen’s former assistant and chief coach of Hanoi Trang An 1 football club, Dong, received most support from the National Coaches Council.
“Although the VFF wanted the women’s team to be coached by a foreigner, because the Asian Women’s Football Championship is approaching, we decided not to wait. When the decision is made officially, Dong and the VFF will select squad members, who will begin preparations next Saturday for the Asian Championship on May 19,” Hy said.
The national team will also have three assistants. Leading contenders are Nguyen Kim Hong from HCM City , Doan Minh Hai from Vietnam Coal and Minerals and Tran Thi Bich Hanh from VFF’s women’s football division.
“I believe that Dong will do well in the job. If Chen can sort out his personal affairs, he may return to Vietnam in early 2011,” Hy added.
The squad will join a training session in China from May 9-18. From May 19-30, they will participate in the final round of the Asian Championship in China./.
