Kuala Lumpur (VNA) - The Malaysian government has decided to raise the subsistence allowance for fishermen back to 300 RM from 250 RM a month, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said on September 17.

Talking to the press, Muhyiddin said the scheme, among others, offers to eligible farmers, livestock breeders and fishermen to help improve their standard of living amid difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the past, Malaysian fishermen received a subsidy of 300 RM per month, but under the current government, this support was cut to 250 RM per month partly due to great financial difficulties.

The Malaysian government has committed to provide stimulus packages worth 295 billion RM (70 billion USD) to promote economic recovery, including pumping directly 45 billion ringgit in direct injection to the domestic economy.

In addition, the postponement of the payment schedule of bank loans is also helping households reduce the pressure on their financial situation./.
