Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) needs to be strict on illegal foreign fishermen fishing in Malaysian waters, said Shahidan Kassim, a Malaysian cabinet minister.
The official made the statement at a working session with the agency on July 4. He also instructed the MMEA to detain foreign fishing boats that violated Malaysian waters.
The MMEA said it caught hundreds of illegal foreign fishermen in waters off Sarawak in the first five months of the year.
In May, more than 50 fishermen in Pekan district, Pahang state also called for tougher measures on foreign fishermen operating illegally in Malaysian waters.-VNA
