As many as 1,565 illegal workers were detained on the first day of the second phase of Malaysia’s massive operation to flush out illegal immigrants which kicked off on January 21.
Malaysian Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the raid was conducted by over 2,000 officers from police, the Immigration Department, the Civil Defence Department, the National Registration Department, the Anti-corruption Commission and the Malaysian People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela).
Foreign workers travelling to Malaysia without legal documents and working permits were seized in accordance with the country’s laws, he said.
They will be deported within seven days and the biometric system will be used to record their thumbprints so they cannot reenter the country under a different identity in the future, he added.
The second phase of the raid will last until the end of this year. During the first phase, from September 1, 2013 to January 20, 2014, Malaysian competent forces nabbed a total of 17,180 illegal immigrants.-VNA
