Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – Malaysia and the Maldives have agreed to work closely to share information and best practices in tackling terrorism, transnational crime and extremism.
The consensus was reached during the Maldives’ President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s official visit to Malaysia.
Speaking at a press conference after talks with the Maldivian President on March 29, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said that the two leaders were unanimous in rejecting violent extremism and called upon all states to bring perpetrators to justice.
The two sides have also set their sights on boosting trade and investment, with the Maldives calling on Malaysian investors to do business in the island country, specifically in construction, health and tourism.
Meanwhile, Malaysia has agreed upon an extended visa grant to Maldivians for a period of 90 days instead of 30 days, with the aim of getting more people from the island nation to visit and study in Malaysia.
Both sides agreed with the proposal on establishing a Maldivian cultural centre in Kuala Lumpur to increase cultural exchanges between the two countries.
In improving trade and investment cooperation, the Maldives will negotiate with Malaysian authorities on a treaty on double taxation avoidance, according to Abdulla Yameen.-VNA
