Malaysia will build two nuclear power plants with a capacity of 1,000 MW each to balance the nation’s energy supply, Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water Peter Chin said on Dec. 19.
The government is expected to complete the projects’ price fixing in 2013 or 2014 and will call for bidding in 2016.
The first plant is planned to start operation in 2021 and the second one in the following year.
The state-run energy company Tenaga said that the first plant will cost 3.1 billion USD.
Malaysia started operation of the 1MW Triga nuclear reactor in 1982 and signed the international nuclear safety agreement in 1972. The country has also tightened the control of export to prevent smuggling of nuclear technology./.
