(Photo: The Star/ Asia News Network) Kuala Lumpur (VNA) - Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s alliance haswon the elections in the eastern state of Sabah.
Accordingto official results announced on September 27 morning, Muhyiddin’s GabunganRakyat Sabah (GRS) alliance won 38 of the 73 seatsup for grabs in the September 26 election, narrowly taking control of thepreviously opposition-held state.
RivalParti Warisan Sabah and its allies, which was the incumbent Sabah government,won 32 seats.
The Sabah victory would help strengthen Muhyiddin's bid in defending hispremiership against Datuk Seri Anwar, who said on September 23 that he has thenumbers to form the next federal government. However, Muhyiddin affirmed thathe is still the legal prime minister of Malaysia, the position he has heldsince March.
Muhyiddin, in a statement after the resultswere announced, said the victory showed that voters trusted GRS, and asked hisalliance to fulfil its promises.
According to analysts, while the Sabah electionoutcome does not directly affect the balance of power at the national level, itwas a key test of Muhyiddin’s popularity./.
