Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – Inspector General of Royal Malaysia Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun has warned that commercial crime has shown a worrying trend in the country over the past four years.
“Megatrends” involving digital technology, aided by social media access in a global, borderless world, have contributed greatly to various commercial crime trends, particularly in the cyber world, Harun was quoted by Malaysia’s New Straits Times as saying on February 26.
Citing police statistics, Harun stated that the number of commercial crime cases increased from 19,509 in 2015 to 26,277 in 2016 and 28,217 last year.
Since the beginning of this year, the police have received 2,233 reports of commercial crime, he added.
Cheating cases are difficult to break, but the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) will take drastic measures to increase the percentage of cases taken to court, he stressed.
Additionally, Harun reported that police are working closely with Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) to handle a new trend in cheating cases involving crypto-currency Bitcoin.
In 2014, BNM issued a statement that Bitcoin trading was not acknowledged as legal in Malaysia. Last year, however, the central bank proposed that guidelines be produced for crypto-currency focusing on money laundering and financial support for terrorist activities.
Besides Bitcoin, other forms of crypto-currency are Ethereum, Zcash, Dash, Tezos, Ripple dan Monero.-VNA
