Kuala Lumpur (VNA) - The Malaysian government is set to introduce a “kill switch” to enhance online security and tackle cybercrimes.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Azalina Othman said on July 28 that the initiative is expected to be tabled in the Parliament in October.
“Kill switch” aims to increase the responsibility of social media platform providers, and internet messaging services providers in combating cybercrimes like online scams, cyberbullying, the spread of child pornography materials and sexual harassment.
Azalina also revealed that the government has several other initiatives, including studies to amend the Penal Code.
Besides, the country will join hands with the UN Office on Drugs and Crime to organise the International Legal Conference on Online Harms 2024 from September 5-6. The conference will be attended by experts and international advocates for social media accountability and transparency to discuss issues like cybercrime, child protection, social media regulation and the rise of artificial intelligence./.
