Malaysian airports, operated by the Malaysian Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) , provided services for 83.3 million passengers in 2014, up 4.7 percent year on year.
Experiencing a turbulent year with several tragic accidents, the country still recorded the passenger traffic surpassing the 80-million mark, with an increase of 4.9 percent in international travelers and a rise of 4.5 percent in domestic passengers.
Up to 80 percent of the total traffic was handled by AirAsia and Malaysian Airlines while foreign airlines accounted for fewer than 15 percent.
In terms of growth, domestic carriers still maintain their dominant position with Malindo Air topping the list, followed by AirAsia and Malaysian Airlines.
A decline was seen in the operation of foreign airlines due to the reduction of Chinese and European visitors following MH370 and MH17 flight accidents.
As many as 8.2 million passengers went through Malaysia in December, 2014 alone, up 0.3 compared to the same month in 2013. This showed a good sign for the Malaysian aviation sector to recover in 2015.
MAHB forecasts the traffic of 85.8 million air travelers this year, a rise of 3 percent from 2014 if Malaysia maintains its economic growth rate at 5 – 6 percent and global oil prices are kept stable.-VNA
